Through the Khelaun Khelaun programme Play for Change - in collaboration with GAN Nepal - created a lasting sport infrastructure for 44 schools and communities within the Lamjung district of Nepal, with the aim to foster sport participation and promote a conducive learning environment for 6.000 children

The program aimed at motivating the students, especially female students, to be active, gain life skills and to reduce the school drop-out rate and at promoting gender equality and develop children's physical, mental and emotional health.

The programme also provided up-skilling opportunities for sports teachers from 37 schools and official coaching qualifications from FIVB and BWF for coaches and trainers,
The training focused on teaching how to use sport as a mean of learning through play and addressed the issue of gender equality to ensure girls are supported, encouraged and feel comfortable enough to take part in the games.

A Badminton and Volleyball league, hosted by different schools, was held every year to foster community participation and gender equality

The Khelaun Khelaun programme introduced a new concept of building outdoor gyms to encourage parents to acknowledge the benefits of sport and attend sporting events at their children’s schools.
This resulted in a reduction of the cultural lack of parental awareness for the need of being involved in their children’s education.

In addition to the sport training, the program also offered nutritional classes and regular meeting opportunities for girls to address general health and wellbeing issues.

Context

Nepal features a high level of gender inequality, embedded throughout many aspects of the community, high drop out rate in schools, particularly impacting socially excluded groups, and lack of conducive learning environment and of sport infrastructure (lack of facilities, equipment, structure and knowledge about sport)
