A weekly basketball & mentoring programme in schools for 80 girls aged 11 to 16 years old to develop confidence, motivation & leadership skills and increase the adoption of an active & healthy lifestyle

The project targeted 80 girls aged 11 to 16 year old. The age range was set after research showed that teenage girls are the most at risk of not participating in sport.

The programme had 4 participating schools, 3 from London’s borough Brent, and 1 from Wandsworth, two of the most deprived boroughs of London.

The coaching was implemented by our local partner Reach and Teach, a London basketball charity, with each school having their own coach.

Further to basketball coaching, the girls had the opportunity to assist to an inspiring talk held by Bonita Norris, explorer and public speaker.

They also attended a nutritional and cooking workshop by our local partner Purple Carrot, London Nutritionist.

Furthermore the girls were offered the opportunity to qualify as a Level 1 or apprentice basketball coach through Basketball England.

Context

Official studies show teenage girls aged 14-16 have the lowest participation in sport. Read more here. The poorest boroughs of London are particularly affected by this as young girls are not encouraged to play sport or can't access it due to cost and lack after-school sports programmes for teenage girls
